What's an 8-Track? Why is the band called 8Track Mind?
Okay, so I realize some of the younger people out there might not even know what an 8-Track is. For shame!! Shame on you!!! Don't they teach anything important in history class anymore?!? For those of you who don't know, here is what an 8-Track is, and why our band is called 8Track Mind. The 8-Track cassette tape was a weird type of media for recorded music consisting of a continuously looping magnetic tape enclosed in a big goofy plastic case. It was wildly but briefly popular during the Seventies, produced mediocre audio, and was prone to all kinds of bizarre behavior. Back in the day, you could buy your music on vinyl LP, cassette tape, or 8-Track format. If you were cool you bought 8-Tracks. If you were really cool you had an 8-Track player in your car. The 8-Track player was about the size of a 4-slice toaster, and your car was probably a purple Gremlin. The 8-Track soon went the way of the dodo-bird, beta-max, beta-barn, all things beta, really; the 78, the 45, the vinyl LP... I guess that the 8-Track is totally obsolete and useless today would be the main message I am trying to communicate here.
Yet, the 8-Track Tape remains an enduring symbol of the era known as the Seventies. Much like the lava-lamp, bell-bottoms, that yellow happy face thing, and the poster of Farrah Fawcett-Majors in the red swimsuit thumb-tacked strategically to my bedroom ceiling, the 8-Track is instantly associated with the Seventies. The Seventies were a simpler, more carefree time. It was a time when smoking in the workplace, being a litterbug, recreational pharmaceutical use, and 'key parties' were all socially acceptable forms of behavior, to varying degrees. It was a time when they could not put too much sugar into kid's breakfast cereal. It was a time when Michael Jackson was black, and only a little bit peculiar. It was a time when the most popular kitchen appliance color was avocado... I guess that it was really different then compared to now is kinda the central theme I'm trying to articulate here. And, the Seventies were also a golden-age of popular music. Musical legends like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, and the Poppy Family all reached the peak of their musical genius during the seventies. 8Track Mind takes you back to the very best music of that era. And if anyone is interested in arranging a 'key party', talk to Jimi Skidmarx. Keep on Truckin' Dr. Funkenstein |
